Overview:
This will be a three day backpacking trip to explore the Highlands of Roan in the best way possible. During our trip, we will photograph the gorgeous last round of wildflowers, which include Queen Anne’s Lace and Goldenrod, among others. During our mornings, we will enjoy a beautiful Sunrise over a field of flowers, followed shortly by Hot Coffee and a Campfire Breakfast. We will spend all day lounging and exploring the area. Sunsets will be near camp on my favorite side trail amount vast rock outcroppings and Golden grasses. At night, we will revel in the incredible night sky under some of the darkest skies in the High Country. I promise you will be awed by all the Stars you will see.
During August, lots of things are going on up at Roan. This is a great time to see gorgeous clouds building and an occasional Thunder boomer in the area, adding beautiful drama to even your midday images. There will also be Blueberries that are ripe by the thousands. I should probably mention my favorite part, though, and that’s the golden grass that is interwoven around the beautiful rock up there. Not to mention it is Prime Time Milky Way Season, and by getting back into the backcountry a little ways, the skies grow incredibly dark, and the Milky Way shines all the way across the entire sky.
This is a special time of the year up there, and you won’t see the crazy traffic that you see during Spring. Ssh, we’ll just keep this our little secret.
I know what you are thinking…. I don’t really backpack, but I want to see all of this. Rest assured that if you are in moderate shape, you can do this. I have lots of extra equipment that is available to you, and I will help you pack lightly so that you can enjoy your time in this amazing place without feeling overburdened. I plan plenty of time on arrival day so that we can take our time going up. It is just under 3 miles, and it is up and down along the Appalachian Trail. We break the trail up coming in and going out with casual photography so there is plenty of time to rest and relax. There are a lot of very cool vistas and rock formations to see along the way.
Join me for this amazing adventure up at 6000’ for an experience that you will never forget!! here will be a moderate backpack trip of 2.5 miles along the Appalachian Trail to our base camp.
